Privacy Suite
What is the Privacy Suite?
The Privacy Suite is a set of tools that helps you control your privacy online. To see the Privacy Suite, click on the ninja icon at the top right corner of your browser.
The Privacy Suite has several features inside: Anti-Tracking, AdControl, HTTPS Redirect, Anti-Fingerprinting and Ninja Mode.
What are the different privacy levels?
There are three privacy levels in the Privacy Suite: Low, Medium and High. Depending on the website you are on, you may need a higher or lower level of privacy.
In Low, this is your baseline browsing level. You're less protected but you can use it for websites that don’t load correctly.
In Medium, this is the ideal mix of user experience and privacy. This level is recommended for everyday browsing.
In High, you are the most protected. Because of the high privacy settings, some websites may not load correctly.
What if I want to allow ads?
To allow ads to display on a website, you must switch to Low Privacy.
Why are parts of the Privacy Shield greyed out?
Some tools are only available in higher levels of privacy. Simply change levels to access all the tools. For everyday browsing, we recommend that you use Medium Privacy.
What are trackers?
An invisible tracker is a small piece of code, often called web beacon, web bug or web pixel. It is used extensively in advertising, because it can monitor what you are doing online—sites you visit, ads you click on and purchases you make. Trackers can be directly integrated into the code of a website or an email.
In the Privacy Suite, you can see how many trackers have been blocked on a given page.
What are ads?
Ads are short for advertisements. Businesses or individuals create ads to sell their product and pay to have them on websites. Ads are often part of an advertising network, which use cookies extensively to display targeted advertising.
The Privacy Suite has a built-in ad blocker, AdControl, which lets you block ads in Medium and High Privacy. In the Privacy Suite, you can see how many ads have been blocked on a given page.
What are cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that is stored in your browser. A cookie is created when you visit a website. This allows the website to keep track of your movements on the website, and to remember your login information, items in your cart and other preferences.
While first-party cookies (from the actual website) post no privacy issues, third-party cookies (from other companies or websites) are much more invasive.
Third-party cookies can track your online behavior all across the web. This helps advertising companies create deep profiles based on your interests, which they can then use to display targeted advertising.
All third-party cookies are automatically blocked in UR. The Privacy Suite will show you how many cookies have been blocked on a given page.
What is Ninja Mode?
Ninja Mode is a tool that lets you browse anonymously. Nothing is tracked or saved—browsing history, cookies and internet searches are all anonymous. If you click on the ninja icon, your tab will reload in Ninja Mode.
What is HTTPS Redirect?
Websites often accept two protocols which allow you to connect to the website. The original, HTTP, has been around since the beginning of the internet. HTTPS, however is newer and it encrypts your data on the website. This is especially important for sensitive information.
Where possible, UR will redirect users to the more secure HTTPS version of a website.
What is Anti-Fingerprinting?
Anti-Fingerprinting is a feature built into all three privacy levels to combat a "digital fingerprint" being created with your data. To limit your browser being identified, we continually randomize your device information. This means that you will appear as a different user across the web, even if you return to the same website.
Some websites act strange or don't load at all. What's wrong?
Because of the high privacy settings, some websites may not load correctly in High Privacy. We suggest that you switch to Low Privacy if you encounter this.
Can I customize the settings for Low, Medium and High levels?
Not yet. Coming soon!
